“If you are looking for an English-speaking physiotherapist in Tokyo”..........

Do you often experience tight shoulders, neck stiffness, or persistent tension between your shoulder blades?

Have you noticed that your head tends to move forward or your shoulders become rounded, especially after long hours at a desk or using your smartphone?

You may have what is commonly described as Forward Head Posture and Rounded Shoulders.

These postural changes are very common among people who spend long periods working at a computer, using smartphones, studying, driving, or caring for young children.

At Physio Center in Tokyo, our English-speaking physiotherapist provides individual assessment, muscle release techniques, therapeutic exercise, and self-exercise guidance to help improve posture and reduce persistent neck, shoulder, and upper back tension.

Why Do the Neck, Shoulders, and Upper Back Become So Tight?

Persistent tightness around the neck, shoulders, and between the shoulder blades is not always caused simply by “tight muscles.”

Several factors may contribute to the problem.

For example, excessive tension in the upper trapezius muscles, tightness of the pectoralis minor muscles at the front of the chest, and reduced stability or control of the shoulder blades may all affect the position and movement of the upper body.

When the shoulder blades are not moving or being controlled effectively, other muscles around the neck and shoulders may need to work harder to support the upper body.

Over time, this can contribute to persistent muscle tension, stiffness, fatigue, and discomfort.

A common posture associated with these problems is Forward Head Posture with Rounded Shoulders, where the head moves forward in relation to the trunk and the shoulders tend to round forward.

Desk Work and Smartphone Use Are Not the Only Causes

Long hours of desk work, computer use, smartphone use, and working from home are common contributors to neck and shoulder tension.

However, they are not the only possible factors.

Daily activities such as carrying bags, commuting, prolonged sitting, studying, and caring for babies or young children can also place repeated stress on the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

In some people, the problem may also be related to areas of the body that seem far away from the shoulders.

For example, the position and control of the pelvis and spine, core stability, lower-limb alignment, and even foot posture and arch function can influence how the body maintains an upright posture.

This is why simply massaging the painful or tight area may provide temporary relief but may not always address the factors contributing to the problem.

We Look at More Than Just the Painful Area

At Physio Center, we assess not only where you feel pain or tightness but also how your body moves and maintains posture as a whole.

Depending on your symptoms, your assessment may include:

  • Neck, shoulder, and shoulder blade movement
  • Muscle tightness and flexibility
  • Shoulder blade stability and control
  • Forward Head Posture and Rounded Shoulders
  • Thoracic spine mobility
  • Pelvic and spinal alignment
  • Core stability
  • Standing and sitting posture
  • Lower-limb and foot alignment when relevant

By identifying the individual factors contributing to your symptoms, we can provide treatment and exercises that are appropriate for your body rather than simply treating the area that feels tight.

Muscle Release and Exercise Therapy for Better Posture

Treatment may include hands-on muscle release techniques to reduce excessive muscle tension around the neck, shoulders, chest, and shoulder blades.

However, improving posture usually requires more than releasing tight muscles.

We also provide individualized therapeutic exercise and self-exercise instruction to improve mobility, muscle balance, shoulder blade control, core stability, and overall posture.

Our goal is not to force your body into a rigid “perfect posture.”

Instead, we aim to help your body move more comfortably and efficiently and maintain different postures with less unnecessary muscle tension.

You will also learn exercises that you can perform at home or at work to help manage your symptoms independently.
