Introduction of Schroth scoliosis exercises with the Cheneau scoliosis brace : Part 1 (corrective exercises for right thoracic convexity and left lumbar convexity) for foreign clients living in Japan.

In this issue, we will introduce Schroth scoliosis exercises (left side lying position) with the Schroth scoliosis brace for right convexity of the thoracic spine and left convexity of the lumbar spine. Normally, only the Schroth scoliosis exercises are performed, but there are advantages to performing the exercises with the brace in order to increase the effectiveness of the exercises and to be more aware of the areas to be stretched. In the radiographs below, the left side of the patient is on the right side of the body, and the right side of the patient is on the left side of the body. This is called an AP image, which is taken with the front of the body (front of the body) facing the camera. For such a scoliosis curve, the scoliosis curve is corrected with a scoliosis brace that is shaped to apply pressure on the thoracic spine from left posterior to right anterior (gymnastics photo: yellow arrow pointing downward) and on the lumbar spine from left posterior to right anterior (gymnastics photo: yellow arrow pointing upward). While providing the adjusting force of the brace, the Schroth exercises further lengthen the muscles of the concave part while efficiently contracting the stretched muscles of the convex part. In the photo below of the exercises being performed facing left, the left arm is extended toward the head to further extend the left side of the thoracic spine (be aware to inhale and expand while extending). Also, by extending the right leg downward and lifting it up, we are stretching the shortened muscles in the right lumbar region while contracting the muscles in the left lumbar region. In this way, Schroth scoliosis exercises are characterized not only by stretching but also by a combination of muscle contraction and breathing exercises. In the next issue, we will introduce exercises for the right side lying position.
